How to convert bytes per second to megabits per second
A byte per second is 8 bits per second. Decimal Mbps and binary Mibit/s differ. These rates exclude protocol overhead; real transfer time also depends on throughput and latency.
Use x for the value in B/s, b for the intermediate value in bit/s, and y for the result in Mbit/s.
Mbit/s = B/s × 8 ÷ 1000000
Worked examples
10 B/s ≈ 0.00008 Mbit/s
Step 1: (10 × 8) ≈ 80 bit/s.
Step 2: 80 ÷ 1000000 ≈ 0.00008 Mbit/s.20 B/s ≈ 0.00016 Mbit/s
Step 1: (20 × 8) ≈ 160 bit/s.
Step 2: 160 ÷ 1000000 ≈ 0.00016 Mbit/s.
Results are rounded to 12 significant digits. Converting units does not increase the precision of the original measurement. Very large or small values outside JavaScript’s finite numeric range are rejected.
