How to convert mebibytes to kibibytes
One byte is 8 bits. Decimal kilo/mega/giga use powers of 1000; binary kibi/mebi/gibi use powers of 1024. Marketing capacity and operating-system displays can therefore differ.
Use x for the value in MiB, b for the intermediate value in B, and y for the result in KiB.
KiB = MiB × 1048576 ÷ 1024
Worked examples
10 MiB ≈ 10240 KiB
Step 1: (10 × 1048576) ≈ 10485760 B.
Step 2: 10485760 ÷ 1024 ≈ 10240 KiB.20 MiB ≈ 20480 KiB
Step 1: (20 × 1048576) ≈ 20971520 B.
Step 2: 20971520 ÷ 1024 ≈ 20480 KiB.
Results are rounded to 12 significant digits. Converting units does not increase the precision of the original measurement. Very large or small values outside JavaScript’s finite numeric range are rejected.
About Mebibytes
Mebibytes (MiB) measures data storage under the conventions above. The base value in B is (x × 1048576), where x is the numerical value in MiB. Factors shown here are rounded for display; calculations use the stored factor.
About Kibibytes
Kibibytes (KiB) measures data storage under the conventions above. The base value in B is (x × 1024), where x is the numerical value in KiB. Factors shown here are rounded for display; calculations use the stored factor.
