How to convert kibibytes to mebibytes
One byte is 8 bits. Decimal kilo/mega/giga use powers of 1000; binary kibi/mebi/gibi use powers of 1024. Marketing capacity and operating-system displays can therefore differ.
Use x for the value in KiB, b for the intermediate value in B, and y for the result in MiB.
MiB = KiB × 1024 ÷ 1048576
Worked examples
10 KiB ≈ 0.009765625 MiB
Step 1: (10 × 1024) ≈ 10240 B.
Step 2: 10240 ÷ 1048576 ≈ 0.009765625 MiB.20 KiB ≈ 0.01953125 MiB
Step 1: (20 × 1024) ≈ 20480 B.
Step 2: 20480 ÷ 1048576 ≈ 0.01953125 MiB.
Results are rounded to 12 significant digits. Converting units does not increase the precision of the original measurement. Very large or small values outside JavaScript’s finite numeric range are rejected.
