How to convert kilobytes to bits
One byte is 8 bits. Decimal kilo/mega/giga use powers of 1000; binary kibi/mebi/gibi use powers of 1024. Marketing capacity and operating-system displays can therefore differ.
Use x for the value in kB, b for the intermediate value in B, and y for the result in bit.
bit = kB × 1000 ÷ 0.125
Worked examples
10 kB ≈ 80000 bit
Step 1: (10 × 1000) ≈ 10000 B.
Step 2: 10000 ÷ 0.125 ≈ 80000 bit.20 kB ≈ 160000 bit
Step 1: (20 × 1000) ≈ 20000 B.
Step 2: 20000 ÷ 0.125 ≈ 160000 bit.
Results are rounded to 12 significant digits. Converting units does not increase the precision of the original measurement. Very large or small values outside JavaScript’s finite numeric range are rejected.
