Data Storage / bit → kB
Convert Bits to Kilobytes
Convert bit and byte counts with explicit decimal and binary prefixes. Convert Bits (bit) to Kilobytes (kB). Find the formula, worked examples, unit definitions, and practical guidance below.
How to convert bits to kilobytes
One byte is 8 bits. Decimal kilo/mega/giga use powers of 1000; binary kibi/mebi/gibi use powers of 1024. Marketing capacity and operating-system displays can therefore differ.
Use x for the value in bit, b for the intermediate value in B, and y for the result in kB.
kB = bit × 0.125 ÷ 1000
Worked examples
10 bit ≈ 0.00125 kB
Step 1: (10 × 0.125) ≈ 1.25 B.
Step 2: 1.25 ÷ 1000 ≈ 0.00125 kB.20 bit ≈ 0.0025 kB
Step 1: (20 × 0.125) ≈ 2.5 B.
Step 2: 2.5 ÷ 1000 ≈ 0.0025 kB.
Results are rounded to 12 significant digits. Converting units does not increase the precision of the original measurement. Very large or small values outside JavaScript’s finite numeric range are rejected.
About Bits
Bits (bit) measures data storage under the conventions above. The base value in B is (x × 0.125), where x is the numerical value in bit. Factors shown here are rounded for display; calculations use the stored factor.
About Kilobytes
Kilobytes (kB) measures data storage under the conventions above. The base value in B is (x × 1000), where x is the numerical value in kB. Factors shown here are rounded for display; calculations use the stored factor.
