How to convert millisieverts to rem

This converts units of an equivalent dose that has already been determined. It does not infer sieverts from grays or estimate individual health risk. Radiation and tissue weighting are not unit factors.

Use x for the value in mSv, b for the intermediate value in Sv, and y for the result in rem.

rem = mSv × 0.001 ÷ 0.01

Worked examples

  • 10 mSv ≈ 1 rem

    Step 1: (10 × 0.001) ≈ 0.01 Sv.
    Step 2: 0.01 ÷ 0.01 ≈ 1 rem.

  • 20 mSv ≈ 2 rem

    Step 1: (20 × 0.001) ≈ 0.02 Sv.
    Step 2: 0.02 ÷ 0.01 ≈ 2 rem.

Results are rounded to 12 significant digits. Converting units does not increase the precision of the original measurement. Very large or small values outside JavaScript’s finite numeric range are rejected.

About Millisieverts

Millisieverts (mSv) measures radiation equivalent dose under the conventions above. The base value in Sv is (x × 0.001), where x is the numerical value in mSv. Factors shown here are rounded for display; calculations use the stored factor.

About Rem

Rem (rem) measures radiation equivalent dose under the conventions above. The base value in Sv is (x × 0.01), where x is the numerical value in rem. Factors shown here are rounded for display; calculations use the stored factor.
