How to convert watts to kilowatts
Mechanical horsepower is 550 foot-pounds-force per second. Metric horsepower uses 75 kilogram-force meters per second and has a different value.
Use x for the value in W, b for the intermediate value in W, and y for the result in kW.
kW = W ÷ 1000
Worked examples
10 W ≈ 0.01 kW
Step 1: (10 × 1) ≈ 10 W.
Step 2: 10 ÷ 1000 ≈ 0.01 kW.20 W ≈ 0.02 kW
Step 1: (20 × 1) ≈ 20 W.
Step 2: 20 ÷ 1000 ≈ 0.02 kW.
Results are rounded to 12 significant digits. Converting units does not increase the precision of the original measurement. Very large or small values outside JavaScript’s finite numeric range are rejected.
