How to convert kilobytes to megabytes
One byte is 8 bits. Decimal kilo/mega/giga use powers of 1000; binary kibi/mebi/gibi use powers of 1024. Marketing capacity and operating-system displays can therefore differ.
Use x for the value in kB, b for the intermediate value in B, and y for the result in MB.
MB = kB × 1000 ÷ 1000000
Worked examples
10 kB ≈ 0.01 MB
Step 1: (10 × 1000) ≈ 10000 B.
Step 2: 10000 ÷ 1000000 ≈ 0.01 MB.20 kB ≈ 0.02 MB
Step 1: (20 × 1000) ≈ 20000 B.
Step 2: 20000 ÷ 1000000 ≈ 0.02 MB.
Results are rounded to 12 significant digits. Converting units does not increase the precision of the original measurement. Very large or small values outside JavaScript’s finite numeric range are rejected.
