How to convert kilobytes to mebibytes
One byte is 8 bits. Decimal kilo/mega/giga use powers of 1000; binary kibi/mebi/gibi use powers of 1024. Marketing capacity and operating-system displays can therefore differ.
Use x for the value in kB, b for the intermediate value in B, and y for the result in MiB.
MiB = kB × 1000 ÷ 1048576
Worked examples
10 kB ≈ 0.00953674316406 MiB
Step 1: (10 × 1000) ≈ 10000 B.
Step 2: 10000 ÷ 1048576 ≈ 0.00953674316406 MiB.20 kB ≈ 0.0190734863281 MiB
Step 1: (20 × 1000) ≈ 20000 B.
Step 2: 20000 ÷ 1048576 ≈ 0.0190734863281 MiB.
Results are rounded to 12 significant digits. Converting units does not increase the precision of the original measurement. Very large or small values outside JavaScript’s finite numeric range are rejected.
About Kilobytes
Kilobytes (kB) measures data storage under the conventions above. The base value in B is (x × 1000), where x is the numerical value in kB. Factors shown here are rounded for display; calculations use the stored factor.
About Mebibytes
Mebibytes (MiB) measures data storage under the conventions above. The base value in B is (x × 1048576), where x is the numerical value in MiB. Factors shown here are rounded for display; calculations use the stored factor.
