How to convert kibibytes to gigabytes
One byte is 8 bits. Decimal kilo/mega/giga use powers of 1000; binary kibi/mebi/gibi use powers of 1024. Marketing capacity and operating-system displays can therefore differ.
Use x for the value in KiB, b for the intermediate value in B, and y for the result in GB.
GB = KiB × 1024 ÷ 1000000000
Worked examples
10 KiB ≈ 0.00001024 GB
Step 1: (10 × 1024) ≈ 10240 B.
Step 2: 10240 ÷ 1000000000 ≈ 0.00001024 GB.20 KiB ≈ 0.00002048 GB
Step 1: (20 × 1024) ≈ 20480 B.
Step 2: 20480 ÷ 1000000000 ≈ 0.00002048 GB.
Results are rounded to 12 significant digits. Converting units does not increase the precision of the original measurement. Very large or small values outside JavaScript’s finite numeric range are rejected.
