Data Storage / KiB → bit
Convert Kibibytes to Bits
Convert bit and byte counts with explicit decimal and binary prefixes. Convert Kibibytes (KiB) to Bits (bit). Find the formula, worked examples, unit definitions, and practical guidance below.
How to convert kibibytes to bits
One byte is 8 bits. Decimal kilo/mega/giga use powers of 1000; binary kibi/mebi/gibi use powers of 1024. Marketing capacity and operating-system displays can therefore differ.
Use x for the value in KiB, b for the intermediate value in B, and y for the result in bit.
bit = KiB × 1024 ÷ 0.125
Worked examples
10 KiB ≈ 81920 bit
Step 1: (10 × 1024) ≈ 10240 B.
Step 2: 10240 ÷ 0.125 ≈ 81920 bit.20 KiB ≈ 163840 bit
Step 1: (20 × 1024) ≈ 20480 B.
Step 2: 20480 ÷ 0.125 ≈ 163840 bit.
Results are rounded to 12 significant digits. Converting units does not increase the precision of the original measurement. Very large or small values outside JavaScript’s finite numeric range are rejected.
About Kibibytes
Kibibytes (KiB) measures data storage under the conventions above. The base value in B is (x × 1024), where x is the numerical value in KiB. Factors shown here are rounded for display; calculations use the stored factor.
About Bits
Bits (bit) measures data storage under the conventions above. The base value in B is (x × 0.125), where x is the numerical value in bit. Factors shown here are rounded for display; calculations use the stored factor.
