How to convert bits to bytes
One byte is 8 bits. Decimal kilo/mega/giga use powers of 1000; binary kibi/mebi/gibi use powers of 1024. Marketing capacity and operating-system displays can therefore differ.
Use x for the value in bit, b for the intermediate value in B, and y for the result in B.
B = bit × 0.125
Worked examples
10 bit ≈ 1.25 B
Step 1: (10 × 0.125) ≈ 1.25 B.
Step 2: 1.25 ÷ 1 ≈ 1.25 B.20 bit ≈ 2.5 B
Step 1: (20 × 0.125) ≈ 2.5 B.
Step 2: 2.5 ÷ 1 ≈ 2.5 B.
Results are rounded to 12 significant digits. Converting units does not increase the precision of the original measurement. Very large or small values outside JavaScript’s finite numeric range are rejected.
