How to convert grams to kilograms
These units measure mass. Converting recipe weights to cups requires an ingredient-specific density; the same volume of flour and water will not have the same mass.
Use x for the value in g, b for the intermediate value in kg, and y for the result in kg.
kg = g × 0.001
Worked examples
10 g ≈ 0.01 kg
Step 1: (10 × 0.001) ≈ 0.01 kg.
Step 2: 0.01 ÷ 1 ≈ 0.01 kg.20 g ≈ 0.02 kg
Step 1: (20 × 0.001) ≈ 0.02 kg.
Step 2: 0.02 ÷ 1 ≈ 0.02 kg.
Results are rounded to 12 significant digits. Converting units does not increase the precision of the original measurement. Very large or small values outside JavaScript’s finite numeric range are rejected.

A gram is one thousandth of a kilogram. Recipes and small packages often use grams. A gram measures mass, not liquid volume.

Definitions and sources
Use mass units consistently
Pounds and ounces here are avoirdupois units: 16 ounces make one pound. Enter 8 pounds 8 ounces as 8.5 pounds, rather than 8.8 pounds. Precious metals may use troy ounces, which are not included here.
A weight conversion preserves mass. It cannot tell you how many cups an ingredient fills without knowing its density and how it was measured. Use a kitchen scale when a recipe specifies mass.
Keeping ingredients in the same mass unit also makes it easier to compare quantities in recipe calculations.
